Lap Siding Calculator
An eight inch lap siding board does not cover eight inches of wall. With an inch and a quarter of overlap it covers six and a quarter, so a takeoff based on board width comes out nearly thirty percent short — and it runs out near the top of the wall, which is the worst place to discover it. This calculator works in exposure throughout, divides the wall into even courses so there is no part-height strip under the eave, and adjusts the exposure so course lines land on window heads instead of being cut through them.
- Exposure per course
- 6 3/4" 16 courses over 108" of wall. The maximum exposure is 6 3/4" — board width less the minimum overlap — and dividing the wall evenly gives 6 3/4", with 1 1/4" of overlap. Every course identical, no odd strip at the top.

- 6 3/4" of 8" 16% of every board is hidden under the one above it. Ordering by board width instead of exposure leaves you 367 ft short on this wall — enough to stop the job near the top, which is the worst possible place to run out.

- 16 Always round up and then divide the wall evenly, rather than running full exposure courses from the bottom and leaving a remainder at the top. A part-height course under the eave is visible from the ground and it is the standard sign of a wall laid out by repetition rather than division.

- 12 courses at 6 11/16" Setting the exposure to 6 11/16" below the window head puts a course line exactly at the head, so the siding meets the trim in a full course instead of being cut through. Above the head, return to 6 3/4" or run its own even division to the eave.

- 2,347 ft 1,200 ft² × 1.78 ft per ft² at 6 3/4" exposure, plus 10% waste. That coverage figure is the one to compare between board widths — a wider board with the same overlap covers more per foot and costs less to install.
- Pieces to buy
- 196 × 12 ft Long stock reduces the number of butt joints, and butt joints in siding are both a weather detail and a visible one. Where they are unavoidable, they land over a stud, get staggered between courses, and never line up two above one another.
- Make a story pole

It carries the layout around the building so courses line up on every elevation, and it catches an accumulating error long before it becomes visible. Exposure is the number that matters
Lap siding works by overlapping: each course sits over the top of the one below so water runs down the face and off. The visible part of each board is its exposure, and the exposure is what covers the wall.
Board width minus the minimum overlap gives the maximum exposure. An eight inch board with an inch and a quarter overlap can show six and three quarters at most, and that figure — not eight — is what the wall divides by.
The material consequence is direct: coverage per linear foot is exposure divided by twelve, not board width divided by twelve. Ordering from board width understates the requirement by the overlap fraction, which is between fifteen and thirty percent on common profiles.
It is the same class of error as using nominal deck board width, running in the opposite direction and considerably larger.
Divide the wall, do not repeat up it
The instinct is to set the exposure at the maximum and start nailing from the bottom. That works until the top, where whatever is left over becomes a part-height course under the eave.
A narrow strip at the top is visible from the ground on every elevation, and it reads as a mistake because it is one. The alternative costs nothing: count how many courses the wall needs at maximum exposure, round up, and divide the wall height by that number. Every course is then identical and slightly under the maximum.
The layout then goes onto a story pole — a straight batten marked with every course line — which is transferred to each corner. That carries the layout around the building so courses meet correctly at the corners, and it prevents the accumulating error that comes from marking each course off the last board.
Small errors compound. A sixteenth of an inch per course over twenty courses is an inch and a quarter of drift, which is plainly visible where the siding meets a window on the other side of the wall.
Landing on the windows
The detail that separates a good siding job from an adequate one is that course lines meet window and door trim cleanly rather than being cut through mid-course.
Exposure has a usable range — anywhere between the maximum and something noticeably tighter — and a small adjustment within that range moves the course lines a long way over the height of a wall. Choosing an exposure that puts a course line at the window head, and often at the sill as well, removes the awkward cut entirely.
Where the head and sill cannot both be satisfied, the head matters more because it is at eye level and because water management there is more critical. Where neither works with a single exposure, using one exposure below the windows and a slightly different one above is invisible in practice — the change happens across the break in the wall where nothing lines up anyway.
